Ways to manage a busy life

It’s a common answer to the question “How are you?”, “Busy” we always say. Balancing our lives and all the things that come with it such as work, family, friends, businesses and ourselves can sometimes seem impossible. We all have busy lives, but sometimes it can become too much.

If you’re struggling to manage your busy life you might find some of these tips helpful.

Do What Matters Most

We often have such busy lives because we simply take on too much. You don’t need to be the person that does everything - Tuckshop mum, gym junkie, workaholic, we all know someone like this. They take on everything, never say no, and it’s not long before they’re burnt out and needing a break.

You can’t do everything, so take some time to work out what really matters to you and work out what you can do to prioritise that. Your priority will be different to someone else’s and may even change as time goes on and your situations change, so revisit this whenever you feel like things are getting out of hand.

Delegate and Outsource

The busiest people have learnt the importance of delegation, take it from Richard Branson who said: “I learnt to delegate from a young age”. When there’s just too much to do and not enough hours in the day, you might find delegating or outsourcing helpful. At work, see if you can delegate a task to somebody else in your team. In your home life, you might find it helpful to outsource the things you don’t have time for or simply don’t enjoy. This could be cleaning, gardening or even washing the car. Whether you hire someone from a service such as Airtasker or ask your teenagers to help out (what else are they for?), reducing your load will free you up for the things that really matter.

Take care of your health

We’ve all heard it before, but you truly can’t take care of someone else well, if you aren’t taking care of yourself. You wouldn’t try and drive your car on empty, so why do we treat our bodies differently?

Getting adequate sleep, eating healthy foods and exercising will help improve your overall health and mood. Schedule some ‘me time’ into your week to help you de-stress and relax. When you’re happy you’ll be able to work more productively.

Organise, Organise, Organise!

Effective time management comes down to being organised. Being organised comes naturally to some people (myself included), and not at all for others. Learning to become more organised can help you feel less stressed and overwhelmed. Take some time each week to work out what needs to be done both at work and at home. I like to use a weekly planner to write out my to-do lists, as well as anything happening that such as bills that are due, appointments, birthdays and events. I like to know what’s coming up so I can be prepared. Some people find blocking out chunks of time for bigger tasks helpful so that they can structure their time around those tasks. Depending on how busy your day is you might need to write daily to-do lists and time block your diary/calendar to make sure there’s enough time to get things done.

When it comes down to it, life is busy and often stressful at times, but we shouldn’t forget to look after ourselves. Try and implement some of these tips and hopefully you’ll be able to achieve a better balance in all the areas of your life. We’re only here for a short time, so use your time wisely.
